Teaching Key Points:

Ditto 2

Teaching Difficult Points:

1. To say the country names correctly.

2. To identify different customs to celebrate a new year around the world

Teaching Procedures:

I. Warm up

1. Sing a song

2. Brainstorm the celebrations students learned in previous lessons. Ask, “What/When is your favorite celebration?” Have them tell how they celebrate, using the frequency adverbs “always, usually, sometimes, never” .eg “My favorite celebration is Women’s Day. It’s on March 8th. I usually make a card for my mom.”

3. Present pictures of a birthday party. Have students describe what they see and tell how they celebrate their own birthdays.

II. Presentation

1. Lead-in: Tell the students they are going to learn what some people in places around the world do when they celebrate a new year.

2. Display a map of the world. Locate the countries that will be discussed on the map. Model the pronunciation of the six countries “Germany,Greece,Ecuador, theUnited States of America,Spain,China”.

3. Play the audio twice. Encourage the students to retell what they hear. Present pictures of the new year celebrations in the above-mentioned countries. Have students tell how people in these countries celebrate a new year, using their prior knowledge and what they learned from the audio. Elicit customs in these places, such as, In Spain, people eat grapes.Introduce more about these customs, such as “Twelve grapes are eaten inSpainat midnight on New Year’s Eve…” Compare with our traditions, ask “Is it the same in our new year’s celebration?”

III. Practice

1. Play the audio for a third time. Have students repeat the sentences and point to the corresponding pictures.

2. Focus on what Morris and Molly say. Ask, “How do you and your family celebrate the Chinese New Year?” Brainstorm traditional customs of the Spring Festival.

3. Have a class survey. Get the students to interview each other “How do you and your family celebrate the Chinese New Year?” Have them check what they do to celebrate in a chart and create a bar graph of the results. Invite volunteers to report.

How do you and your family celebrate a new year?

Reflection:

The students were quite interested in this topic and they were encouraged a lot to talk. The country names caused a little trouble when they listened to the audio. It would be much easier for them to catch up if I paused the audio at each country. The survey was conducted much better than expected, however time wasn’t enough for them to report the results. I should delete the “birthday celebration” part in warm-up so that the students would have more free time to finish the survey.
