Greetings
Step 1 Lead-in Free Talk
Do you like traveling? Which necessary things will you take for your travel and why?
(Teacher guides students to think about the common things they will choose for travel through the phenomenon of people carrying large suitcases when they go out for travel)
Step 2 Project A
• Situation:Your group was traveling in a small plane which crashed on an island in the Pacific Ocean. You are the only survivors, and the plane was destroyed. You have looked around the island and there are no buildings, no people, no animals, but there is a river, a lot of fruit and a lot of insects.
• To help you survive
• In your group, choose any six(but only six) of these things. Think about why you want them and what you will use them for
• (Things: a plastic-covered map of the area, a compass, a penknife, 20 meters of nylon rope, a ladder, a small battery-powered torch, a bottle of medical alcohol, a box of matches with ten matches in it, a spade, five boxes of powered milk, a box containing twenty newspapers)
Step 3 Reading
• There are a lot of island life stories. Did you ever read such similar stories? What happened?
• Task 1:Read the passage independently.
• What is the story about?
• Task 2:Read the passage again and answer some questions
• Task 3:
• 1. Read the passage in groups and try to solve the difficulties
• 2. Retell the story (Pair work)
• Task 4:Discussion
• 1. What is your understanding to the last sentence?
• Standing at the crossroad, he starts his new journey.
• Step 4 Project B
• After three months on the island you are home again! A British company wants to make a TV program about your experiences, but needs more information.
• Group Work:
• 1. It is a talk show.
• 2. Group members take turns to describe what happened during the time on the island and how do you feel. (Attention:there is no host)
• 3. Everyone should take notes and say something.
• 4. Your story will be published so it needs to be as interesting as possible.
• Step 5 Make Comments
• If you are the editor, which story will you choose to be published? And why?
Teaching Reflection:
In this class, I intend to train students’ creative thinking ability and group corporation ability. It is said that a good class is not only teacher-conducted but also student-centered. The aim of this class is to give sufficient time to the students while the teacher only acts as a guider.
The text is about a successful island survival story. The learning material is focused on the project (Imagine your group are the only survivors after a plane crash, how will you choose things to help you to survive and what happened during the days on the deserted island). In order to help students to know about such kind of island story well, so that they can have a better understanding when they do the project group work, I write a story named “ Island Life” based on one movie I watched before -“Cast Away”. It is about the heroin, chuck, a successful and busy manager who survived successfully on an deserted island for 5 years through his strong will, intelligence as well as perseverance. It is a good passage, however, I over-estimated students’ ability, and the passage turns out to be a little bit difficult for them to understand, thus, the time for the project, group work discussion and presentation time is not sufficient. One of the famous educator said that “A successful language class teaching is to create lively language atmosphere in the class and to give students chances to put what they have learned into use.”To my great relief, students are active in thinking during the whole class, and many of them show fantastic English ability. Some of the students who are a little bit shy in class before also dare to put their hands up to show their opinions.
Through this class, I have a deep understanding to the saying “You can’t have your cake and eat it too” , reflecting in this class, I think I have to balance reading and the project in a more flexible way. Actually, in designing this class, my original intention is to concentrate on the project activity itself, as for the reading passage, it is only used as a transition, so I have to learn to leave out some supporting materials even though I am not willing to (since I spent a whole afternoon to write the passage and edit). I gained a lot through this open class. Each class should have a clear target and aim, if I use the question “Did you ever read such similar island stories before? Can you tell us something about it? instead of doing a reading text, it will leave much more time for students to do a deep group work project and I believe that might be much wonderful.
That’s my teaching reflection to this open class.
